While they are not on the endangered species list, they are listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) because of their popularity. This appendix has over 30,000 species that, while not immediately under a threat of extinction, might become in danger of extinction if trade of those species are not strictly monitored and regulated.
