The basic rules for successfull fish keeping are . 1inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. In the case of a Betta it is a 3 inch fish and so it needs at least 3 gallons of water to live in. (so a Marineland Eclipse 6 should do the job OK) It is also a tropical fish and so it needs a heater/thermostat set at 78F and a thermometer to keep a check on it. If you feed the fish well and provide all the above your Betta should do OK. If you fail in any of them I can guarantee that your fish will be constantly getting sick and will live a shortened life.

Betta are airbreathers. So long as the ammonia and nitrates are okay, you don't need filters on a Betta tank.

You can try to put Guppy fish in with your Betta fish. That would be one of the only fish that i would put in with my Betta fish. I say that because i have a Betta male and he is OKAY with guppies. the first guppy i put in his died to to getting picked on by him but the others did not, so just give him another chance if you decide to get guppies. That's not it's species- but bettas will be aggressive towards other fish. Two males shouldn't be put together, neither should a male and female. Two females would be okay
