While both Wolves and Coyotes are of the same Family, Canidae and are considered to be of the same Genus, Canis, that's where the relation ends especially if you also take the domestic dog into consideration. Whereas the domestic dog (Canis Lupus Familiaris) is directly related to and is actually a subspecies of the Wolf (Canis Lupus), the Coyote (Canis Latrans) is actually a 'cousin' to them both.

In other words, the family tree would look something like this (I hope this flow chart displays right :)

Canidae (Family)

  • Canis (Genus)
  • Canis Latrans (Species) = Coyote
  • Canis Lupus (Species) = Wolf
    • Canis Lupus Familiaris (Subspecies) = Domestic Dog
