Often the family you live with is considered your immeadiate family. If you were killed they would be the first people contacted etc. so by this definition no, your cousin is not a direct family member. Often 'direct' family members are your parents, siblings etc.

Yes, a first cousin is considered a legal relative in many legal contexts, including inheritance laws, medical decision-making, and some Immigration applications. However, the specific legal recognition of first cousins can vary by jurisdiction, so it's important to check the laws in your specific location.

Whether your cousin is "close family" depends on what you consider, not what others do. If you grew up in the same town, played together, went to school together and dealt together with family problems, a cousin can be close family. If you grew up in different states and saw each other infrequently, you may not consider that cousin to be close family.

Then, of course, there are not just cousins. There are first cousins, second cousins, fifth cousins, etc. Some may be close and some may not.

Another viewWell, of coarse! Family is all around you. You just may not know it but cousins, nieces, aunts, uncles are Considered close family.
