Energy in mechanical terms can be thought of as an amount of work. Thus if you oppose a force you do work and expend energy. The amount of energy used in moving against a force F depends on the distance moved L, and is in fact the multiple of F and L.

So a simple thing to remember is: Energy (work) = Force x Distance.

The unit of energy is the Joule and this is defined as the energy used to move 1 meter against a force of 1 Newton.
