They did their best to describe the skeletons they found. Fossils in the Gobi are petrified in a way so they look like bleached bone, and the explorers and gold seekers commonly found the bleached remains of those who had fallen to thirst and exposure. Is the Griffin a myth? The type we are familiar with - YES. The origins of the creature - NO, it was wholly believed to be real and at one time, it was.
