I think of it this way: the more bonds an atom has, the stronger it can hold onto the other atom, and therefore it's able to pull it in real tight - making it short and strong both! :) Here's what my chem book says: ---- * A single bond has a bond order of 1. * a double bond has a bond order of 2. * A triple bond has a bond order of 3.
