Yes, even prior to the July 24, 2011 legalization of same-sex marriage in New York, out-of-state same-sex marriages were recognized in New York state by a decision of the State Court of Appeals beginning February 1, 2008. Vermont began permitting same-sex marriage on September 1, 2009, after having legalized civil unions starting July 1, 2000.
