The brain consists of billions of neuron-pathways. During the main development stages of the brain (i.e. childhood and adolescence) the brain is constantly rewiring. Those neuron-pathways that are consistently strengthened by acts such as practising get reinforced, others get re-wired so to speak.

You improve skills through practice - as you practice, your memory improves. You also mature as you age, and your ability to focus and concentrate improves through maturity.
