A waning moon is a moon going from a full moon to a new moon.

A waxing moon is going from a new moon to a full moon.

In other words, waning is going away and waxing is coming.

Waxing and waning are terms for the different phases of the moon. The moon is getting bigger when it is waxing, and getting smaller when it is waning. There are numerous poems that can help one remember the difference between the two, such as one by T. Laskowski that goes "If you see a moon at the end of day, a bright waxing moon is on its way. If you see the moon at the start of the dawn, the waning moon will soon be gone. "

Yes, during the new moon, the Sun and the moon are aligned on the same side of the earth, so the tides are much larger then.

During the Full Moon, the also are aligned but on opposite sides of the earth, so the tides are also much larger, but not quite as high as before.

During first and last quarters, the moon is pulling 90 degrees off from the Sun's pull, and so tides are much lower at those periods.

Go to the library to see the chart on why this is so.

At a new moon, and full moon, Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned, so the tidal effects of Sun and Moon aid each other. At 1st quarter and 4th quarter the effects of Sun and Moon partially cancel each other.

A waning moon is when a moon goes through a phase where the moon is first a cresent then is goes through physical change when it goes from full moon to cresent moon. It changes from right to left. That is a waning moon. A waxing moon is where it does the same thing that a waning moon does exept it goes from left to right.
