Mary 1was the daughter of Henry VIII and ruled England for only 5 years between 1553 and 1558. She was a Roman Catholic and repealed her fathers laws and the Church of England returned to the jurisdiction of Rome. She also revived the Heresy Acts which resulted in the execution of many Protestants some being burned at the stake. The Queen never actually killed anyone. She simply signed the orders for execution.

After her death leading Protestant writers gave her the nickname "Bloody Mary" as a way of tarnishing her reputation. It seems that they had some success??

That's for you to decide. Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe in mythical creatures and legends? I believe some, but not Bloody Mary. I did it once (Lights out in bathroom, candles, turn 3 times saying bloody Mary) and nothing happened. Then again, people have different ways of doing Bloody Mary and there are lots of different versions. You could do it yourself if you want to find out, but it really is whether you believe or not.

That depends what you mean. For example, on Wikipedia, under "Bloody Mary", you will find the following entries:

"Bloody Mary (cocktail) ..." - That one seems to be real.

"Mary I of England, Queen of England and Ireland..." - Seems to be a historical character. In other words, real.

"Bloody Mary (folklore), a ghost said to appear in mirrors when a person repeats her name in front of the mirror" - Obviously not real.

Then there are references to several comic characters called "Bloody Mary", which are also not real, being fictional characters.
