Yes it is, but more importantly bread, especially white bread, has a very high glycemic index.

This means that it's converted very quickly to glucose in your blood (within an hour or less), forcing your body to immediately use it (as energy) or convert it to fat for storage. If you're not doing exercise immediately afterward, your body will convert most of the calories of white bread to fat, within a couple of hours.

It is if it's glazed. Sometimes bakeries caramelize the crust to make it sweeter and smell better.
