Traditional Buddhism (created by the monk Gautama three thousand years ago) differs greatly from Hinduism. In fact, Buddhism in its infancy was considered to be a critique of Hinduism. What is known as Buddhism now (the Dali Lama and Tibetan Buddhist) is far from what it originally was because of it eventual decline as it dissolved into the local religions (one being Hinduism)
Buddhism as it was intended to be can be summed up in the following sentence: How to deal with death. If you were to define it in one word it would be physiology. Buddhism looks at how people can deal with death by looking at how the brain physically works and functions.
