they're different types of antibiotics... amox is a penicillin and clarithromycin is a macrolide. they have similar, but not the same, spectrum of bacteria that they work for... amox is a little better with gram positive bacteria and clarithro is better with some 'atypicals.' in folks with penicillin Allergies, macrolides like clarithro are often acceptable alternatives to amoxicillin in treating upper respiratory infections.
