You would think that the rainforests soil was very fertile and rich due to the enormous amounts of plants growing there on their own. However, the rainforests soil is not rich or fertile at all. The torrential rain washes the nutrients and minerals away. So, instead of getting its minerals and nutrients from the soil, it gets them from fallen trees and rotting leaves. Therefore, if the rainforest is removed for farming it will not grow back without artificial fertilizers.

Rain forests grow because they get plenty of rain and sunlight, and because the land is nurtured by the great diversity of the forest and the animals living in it. Rain forests recycle all nutrients with extreme efficiency. The understory plants are well adapted to the shady environment and benefit from the nutrients dropped from their taller, sun loving neighbors.

The topsoil is so thin in the rainforest - nutrients are used up very quickly - that farming does not work for very long.
