Although improvements have been made through public awareness, the prevalence of fats, especially saturated fats, can make fast food unhealthy to consume regularly. High fat diets have been associated with obesity, large bowel cancer, heart disease and stroke, among other health issues.

Fast food is often very high in calories, fat, sugars, and refined carbohydrates while also being low in essential vitamins and nutrients. This makes it very poor for dietary health. Eating too much fast food can cause weight gain, fatigue or lack of energy (due to lack of proper nutrition), and upset stomach or other digestive problems.

Cholesterol and Free Radicals

When fats are digested they are broken down into various substances to be transported around the body. Cholesterol is one of these substances. Additionally things called 'free radicals' are also produced during their digestion.

It is these free radicals that can cause damage to the insides of the blood vessels eventually leading to the furring up of the blood vessels (atherosclerosis). Sometimes the furring can get so bad it completely blocks the blood vessel or the vessel gets so small inside due to the furring that a small blood clot that might normally pass easily causes the blockage on the blood vessel.

Depending where the blood vessel was transporting blood to, affects the possible outcome. For example if it was a main vessel supplying the brain a person may have a stroke, or if it supplies the heart it may lead to a heart attack.

---

A quick word to say that fruit and vegetables have a protective effect and that is in some part due to the fact they can 'soak' up free radicals thus reducing the damage they cause. .

Most fast foods tend not to be particularly healthy or nutritious. They tend to be high in simple carbohydrates (such as white bread), fat (especially saturated fat from meat or cheese), and sodium (table salt). At the same time, most of them provide very few desirable nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. In addition, fast food establishments tend to market very large portions of their unhealthy meals. As a result, their patrons may overeat while remaining malnourished.

Some fast food places try to introduce healthier food options, such as salads, to their menus. The problem is that most fast food patrons go there for the burgers and fries, not salads, which makes the endeavor unprofitable and thus unsuccessful in many cases.
