There are two kinds of gunpowder, "black powder" and "smokeless powder." I put them in quotes because all gunpowder is black, and all of it smokes when it burns.
Both are used in modern warfare.
Black powder is primarily used as a delay element in other explosives. If you want to build an explosive device that has a time delay between initiating the explosion and the explosion occurring - hand grenades are a prime example - you put a column of black powder between the initiator and the explosive.
Smokeless powder is the propellant in every rifle, shotgun, pistol, shoulder-fired rocket, artillery round, etc., etc., etc., used in the world today.
Nothing was used in place of gunpowder during the Civil War. Gunpowder was made and used extensively by both sides. During the Civil War the guns used black powder for propellant. Modern guns use smokeless powder, which has a completely different chemical composition.
The guns used black powder. It produced volumes of smoke and as highly corrosive to the chambers and barrels.
gunpowder

Yes, it still has uses, including in firearms cartridges and fireworks.

yes
Sulfur is used for a variety of uses. These include gunpowder, matches, rubber, fungicide, insecticide, fumigant, as well as fertilizers.
Gunpowder is the explosive component that propels the "bullet" from the gun. The answer is, yes gunpowder is still as important to the operation of a gun as gasoline is to the operation of a car. Just like gasoline for cars, gunpowder has changed and gotten better at what it does over the past century (or centuries), so the gunpowder used in modern guns is not the same exactly as the gunpowder used , for example, in the civil war, but it is still gunpowder and it is still necessary to operate a gun.
