Dissolve 10g potassium iodide and 3g iodine in 1 L distilled water. Store in brown bottle. Dispense in dropper bottles.*Caution: Iodine vapor is very toxic or extremely irratating. Dust is hazardous when inhaled or touched. Causes burns. Flush with water if body contact occurs."Biology: The Dynamics of Life Laboratory Manual"
A compound consists of atoms of two or more elements bonded to one another. However, iodine contains only one type of atom (all its atoms have the same number of protons). Thus, iodine is an element, not a compound. However, free Iodine only exists as a diatomic molecule at standard conditions. "I2" is how you write the formula of the Iodine molecule. It is definitely molecular but, depending on how you define "compound", it might not fit that definition because it is all the same type of atom.
Iodine is a halogen. Single atom has 53 protons.
Grinding mercury or iodine would be a physical change - you are changing the shape but not the element. However, grinding mercury with iodine may be a chemical change if you end up with mercury iodide through a chemical reaction. Incidentally, I don't recommend actually trying this - mercury is a liquid at room temperature (it is also called quicksilver for this reason) and is very toxic to humans.

it can be treated by iodine and radio active phosphurous.
It is not recommended that it be used for this purpose since it is toxic when taken by mouth. Please see the link.
first off DO NOT HEAT IODINE CRYSTALS because they create the same sort of fumes you would fine in a meth lab and it is possible that it can kill you because of its extremely toxic fumes and
In theory, nothing would happen unless heat was applied to the two chemicals. This would cause the Iodine to sublime into a toxic gas and then react with the Cu wire, forming Copper Iodide, a flaky looking substance on the wire.
