Replacing Transmission Fluid is an essential task and it is good to be able to do it yourself. Be sure to read up and watch plenty of guides before performing the task for yourself.
Make sure you have the right transmission fluid. Changing the fluid will require removing the bottom of the pan and draining the fluid. You will need to replace the pan gasket and it is a good idea to replace the filter. There are kits available with the required parts.
I have no earthly idea.
probably a good idea the gearbox is very tetchy regarding transmission fluid
Transmission fluid can be changed by unbolting the transmission pan on the underside of the vehicle. Unbolt three sides of the pan completely, and just loosen the fourth side, this will allow the pan to hang on an angle and the fluid will drain slowly. Once done draining it is a good idea to replace the filter also, located on the other side of the pan bolted to the transmission.
When the fluid no longer look red. Transmission fluid normally doesn't have to be changed that often. For a manual transmission, maybe after 100K. The manual transmission fluid is thicker and hardly ever breaks down. Unless the gears are clashing, etc. But for an automatic transmission: that would depend on how you drive you vehicle. A good idea for a transmission fluid change would be every 3rd to 4th motor oil change. The transmission fluid is completely different from motor oil, but will eventually wear out. I say a fluid and filter change. It is usually a bad idea to get a transmission flush if the transmission is doing good, so far.
Maybe not but it is a good idea.
If you are changing the fluid yourself it will require somewhere around 7-8qt that is just removing the pan and filter. With a flush it would be somewhere around 16qt. Your owner Manuel should list the fluid capacities. It is a good idea to measure the amount of fluid you removed and replace with the same amount. then topping of as need. If I am not mistaken there is no Dipstick on the transmission for the Pontiac G6. On the TOP of the transmission on the DRIVERS side there is a filler cap where you can Add new fluid. Hope this helps. Good Luck Adam S .. Car Enthusiast
to show (1) whether the transmission needs fluid and (2) to show whether the fluid needs changing. Brown to dark brown reveals burnt fluid and needs changing badly. If high milage it's a good idea to change the transmission filter and the fluid.
Your manual transmission does not have to have fluid in it in order to start the engine. Theoretically you can start the engine with the transmission out of the vehicle totally. That being said.... Its not a good idea to start the engine if there is no fluid in the transmission just in case someone tries to move the vehicle by putting it in gear. You do not want to drive the vehicle with no fluid in the trans.
Very carefully drop the transmission fluid drain pan (it is full of fluid). Unscrew the filter and replace with the new one. Replace the gasket on the drain pan making sure you gaet all of the old gasket off; it will leak if you don't. reinstall the the drain pan. It is a good idea to drain the pan and wipe out with a lint free cloth. You will also want to clean off the magnet in the bottom of the pan as it will have metal shavings on it. If you decide to replace the fluid remember that you are only getting about 1/2 of it if you only replace what is in the pan.
You DO NOT need to reset it, whre did you get that crazy idea/.
The torque convertor uses transmission fluid and is filled by the transmission's internal pump. When you start out with a new convertor, it's a good idea to put a quart of fluid in before installing it on the transmission. When the transmission dipstick shows full, the convertor is also full. An empty torque convertor holds several quarts, depending on the size.
