Today, there is such an outcry about second-hand smoke. Doctors would say the pregnant mom should not be anywhere near a smoker.

But speaking as a layperson here... First, many thousands of parents, especially after WWI and WWII, smoked while the wife was pregnant. Babies were born as healthy as any other baby. Second, air pollution in general is often so high anyway that being around a smoker is not that much different than breathing a city's air. Third, pregnant women are around gas and diesel fumes when driving--no one crusades to remove cars and trucks from everyday life.

Pregnant women can take precautions, of course. Ask your boyfriend to smoke outside when he can or near an open window. Perhaps he can reduce smoking in enclosed places like the car. Maybe he'll want to try to quit.
