Is it better to keep your computer on all day or to turn it on when you need it then shut it off?

This is a question that's basically a personal preference issue. Obviously keeping a computer on all day will use more electricity, but starting and stopping a computer all the time can wear out components earlier. Try to aim for a trade off on this, if your not going to be using the computer for awhile, shut it down. If other people (or you) are likely to be on it soon, keep it running. Windows and many other operating systems can be configured to shut off devices that aren't in use (monitor, USB devices, hard drives) or to go into standby to save power when it's not in use.

∙ 14y agoUse the normal shut down process to turn the computer off but leave power going into the box in order to keep the battery charged. Do not turn off power source otherwise battery will discharge over a period of time.
