It is not illegal in the UK to know that someone has expressed a wish to commit suicide. It is however illegal to assist someone to kill themselves.

The UK Suicide Act of 1961 states

"A person who aids, abets, counsels or procures the suicide of another, or attempt by another to commit suicide shall be liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years."

Is suicide against the law in the UK if so what happens if you attempt it and fail?

Suicide is not against the law in the UK. It was until the 1961 Suicide Act which legalised it and introduced laws which dealt with assistance of suicide. Prior to 1961 suicide was illegal in the UK and was punishable by prison and fines (but not death!)

Is suicide illegal?

In some countries, suicide is illegal. In the UK for example it is also illegal to fail to prevent a suicide you knew was going to take place. Failing to prevent a suicide you knew was going to happen in the UK and some other countries can get you charged with the offence of "Assisted Suicide" or "Suicide Accomplice". Although suicide is illegal in some countries, the individual will not face criminal arrest. Instead they will be summoned to attend counselling and medical procedures to help them overcome the suicidal thoughts. However, if the individual continues to attempt suicide or fails to show for a summoned counselling session, a warrant may be issued for your arrest in some countries. For example, under the Mental Health Act of the UK, you can be arrested and imprisoned within a specialist psychiatric hospital if you are believed to be a serious risk to yourself.

Is it against the law to attempted suicide in the UK?

It is not against the law to attempt suicide in the UK. Suicide and attempted suicide was a crime in England and Wales until 1961. Attempted suicide was (equivalent to) a misdemeanor but suicide was punished by the loss of the dead person's estate. The Church of England may still deny ordinary burial rites to certain suicide victims. However, please don't attempt suicide.

Is it illegal to commit suicide in Australia?

No, it is not illegal. It used to be, and many believe that it still is. I found out last year that the law is no longer valid. In Australia the laws for suicide and attempted suicide varied for each state. It is no longer illegal to commit suicide or attempt suicide, except for the Northern Territory where it is illegal to attempt suicide. The suicide laws were abolished in NSW in 1900, in South Australia in 1935 under section 13A of the Criminal Consolidation Act, and in Victoria in 1958 under the Victorian Crimes Act. You can find these on the internet by googling the key words (crimes or criminal act in the appropriate state or country). It's important to put the word "act" to relate it to actual written laws. Previously, when suicide was illegal there were implications on your estate once you died, but I'm not sure exactly what these implications were. The laws were abolished in the UK under the suicide act of 1961. It was abolished as a crime in the Irish Republic in 1993. In France it was back in the 1700s (sorry, I found this one on wikipedia but I can't remember the exact date. The others I found the actual law under government websites)
