In some states, it is unlawful to provide false information to the police about the whereabouts of someone, or anything else.
Added: PARTICULARLY true if they are involved in conducting an official investigation.
Because laws have been passed that make it illegal for a suspect to lie but no laws have been passed that make it illegal for police to lie (UNLESS THEY ARE TESTIFYING UNDER OATH). There isn't a great deal to motivate a legislature to pass a law restricting police to the truth yet there is sufficient motivation to keep criminals from lying to police. If you become a suspect you should keep your mouth shut and consult an attorney. If the attorney happens to lie on your behalf you are indemnified. Even though you can act as your own attorney in court, you cannot lie to police and then claim you were acting as your own attorney when you did it. It's still you that did the lying.
Yes. When you give a statement to the police, you make that statement under penalty of perjury. If you lie, you can go to prison for perjury.
Yes, it is. This is usually called something like "filing a false report".
Well, it's really almost never okay to lie, of course we all do it. it's human nature to lie, but try to be honest as much as you can. The most of the time someones lies is to keep from hurting someones feelings (or at least when i lie try to stick to that ).
haha its illegal to lie to a cop period.
It would depend on what the lie was about. If you lie about a material fact in an investigation, you may be charged for that. If you tell them you had spaghetti for dinner instead of angel hair pasta, you are probably OK.
It depends on the accident in question. If you are referring to the typical fender bender where no one was criminally negligent (e.g. drunk or reckless driving, excessive speed, felony evading, etc) then no it's not illegal to lie to the officer. Obstruction of justice charges only apply to interfering in the investigation of a CRIME. Since traffic accidents (with the exception of those noted above) are typically civil matters, then those involved in the accident can (and typically will) lie if they feel like it will improve their chances of not being found at fault in the accident. Answer2: Lying in general is not good, why lie when the truth will do? Why lie to a police officer and then the truth gets discovered? Now you create more trouble for yourself than if you had simply come clean in the first place.
no... do it :D
