It is not legal to own any processed or separated Plutonium in any quantities. However if you can get your hands on the naturally occurring mineral muromontite, which is a mixture of uranium and beryllium, it will contain a small amount of natural Plutonium. This is because the beryllium captures the alpha particles from the Uranium and release neutrons, the neutrons are captured by the Uranium and transmute it into Plutonium. It is a very weak and natural breeder reactor, in essence. This is entirely legal to own, as the amounts of Pu contained are vanishingly small.

absolutely, there is no problem owning either natural or depleted uranium. enriched uranium on the other hand is tightly regulated and cannot be owned legally by an individual (at one time even power companies could not own the enriched uranium in their reactors but had to lease it from the government, now they own it but must be licensed). about 15 years ago I bought a disk of depleted uranium a little larger than a quarter over the internet for about $50, then donated it to a school as part of a collection of element samples they could show to students.

Plutonium is not for use at home. Working with plutonium is permitted only in special laboratories or plants, under severe control and protection. The transfer of plutonium is also strictly controlled.

Why do corks float in water?

Any object placed in water will be pulled down into the liquid by gravity. No surprise there. But an object less dense than water will only be pulled down until the object displaces an amount of water equal to its own mass. Then it will float. The water will be pushing up equal to the force of gravity pulling down - an equilibrium. Any object that weighs less than its own volume of water will float. It's lower overall density will result in buoyancy.

Do you need nuclear power?

You don't need nuclear power, energy can be generated using other methods, fossil fuels, hydro-electric etc. However nuclear power does reduce a countries reliance on fossil fuel, which can be particularly important for countries with few fossil fuel reserves of their own. Nuclear power stations do not release CO2 into the atmosphere so do not directly contribute to global warming. Many countries are looking at an investment in nuclear power to help meet CO2 emissions targets. Nuclear power stations are also required to make plutonium for nuclear weapons. Plutonium does not occur naturally and can only be made from uranium in nuclear reactors. Any country with a nuclear weapons program will have a civilian nuclear power industry for this reason.
