It is a really simple answer. I have recently been to Spain and have gone horseback riding. The horse I was riding was a beautiful white stallion named Aquila. The first thing I was told when I mounted was "your horse is slow, so I am going to give you a stick so you can hit him." I responded, "I don't need it, I am fine." They gave it to me anyways. I then urged the horse on with my voice (click with the tounge. I passed everyone, got behind the owner's son, and stayed in front the whole time. I was able to trot 4 times and canter twice, all with the click of the tounge rather than the use of the stick or a kick of the flanks. And this was the so called "slow horse" of the farm. If people can learn how to do this like I did and keep up in trail rides and horse races, the equestrian world would be a lot better. So my answer is horses should not be whipped or kicked.
