In some ways it can be impolite and some way it can't. If you are with your family and are going somewhere you are used to going you don't need fall asleep but if you are going on a long trip with your family then go ahead!
If you are with some other people and its a long trip then and you are really really tired then go ahead. I'm pretty sure they won't mind! :)
