It is not legal to play music through a stereo system. The MTA Rules of Conduct (see Related Link below) state that, "no person shall...create any sound through the use of any sound production device, except as specifically authorized...Use of radios and other devices listened to solely by headphones or earphones and inaudible to others is permitted."
However, it is legal to play a musical instrument on the subway system: "The following nontransit uses are permitted by the Authority, provided they do not impede transit activities and they are conducted in accordance with these rules: ...artistic performances, including the acceptance of donations..."
Note that the use of amplifiers in musical performances is prohibited by the rule regarding use of sound production devices.
