This is a difficult question to answer since women have little protection in Egypt. There are widespread reports and videos of public abuse of women by the police: the people charged with upholding the law. Women have little protection under the law and what law there is is rarely enforced. Videos of police forcing women to disrobe in public in order to disgrace and humiliate them are available on the internet.
Also, Egyptian men have complete control over any women in their families whether or not they are wives, i.e., sisters, mothers, daughters, etc.
