Normally only a very minor whir.
you have to listen to see if your fuel pump is operating when you turn your car on (do not start it) you should hear a humming sound if you dont you can tap your gas tank if you hear the sound after tapping the gas tank now try to start it if it doesnt start it the fuel pump.
trick question......if you can hear the fuel pump.....its probably working but if there is no connection to the batter or a bad connection...you wont hear a thing
If you turn the key on you should hear a humming sound for a few seconds ,If no sound then fuel pump is not working, providing it is a newer model vehicle that has an electric fuel pump. Also you should connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line and check the fuel pressure.
The easiest way is to just turn the key to the run position and listen for a quick humming sound from the rear of the car. That sound it the pump running to pressurize the fuel system. If you cannot hear it (have someone listen in the trunk) you have either a bad fuel pump or an electrical problem pertaining to the fuel system.
You will hear the fuel pump prime for about a second when when you turn the ignition key to the "on" position. It's a low buzzing sound.
Its not uncommon at all for a fuel pump to whine, in fact its more often than not bad if you cant hear it.
under the hood. where all the fuses are. have a friend turn the key to start it, but with out starting it up. you will hear a click sound if it is good. if you hear your fuel pump kick on when the key is turned, then its good.
Just be glad it is making a noise. that is a sign it is working.
Yes. But you normally shouldn't be able to hear it over the sound of the engine running.
If you hear the fuel pump run that is a good sign it is working however, a fuel pump pressure test would tell you if the pump is meeting the required pressure.
The fuel pump may be defective or the fuel filter may be clogged. Replace the fuel filter if you hear the pump run when you first turn on the ignition without starting the engine. It should run for a few seconds. If you do not hear the pump running, check the fuse and the fuel pump relay. If you hear it run and after replacing the fuel filter you still have no fuel, the pump is defective and must be replaced.
When u turn key on , you should hear a humming for a few seconds. this is the fuel pump priming (sending fuel up the line). If you don't hear it, fuel pump is not working.
