no! running a car low on gas will make all the sediment in the tank be sucked in to the fuel pump and into the fuel filter clogging the filter. replace the fuel filter at 20 000 mile intervals. run the car no lower then a 1/4 tank

sounds like you got bad gas, drain the gas and refill with new gas and also change the fuel filter and see what happens.

See the related question link for your answer. The car will run OK, because it is ignoring the bad sensor and running in what we call "open loop". Performance is not going to be as good, and gas mileage will be affected.
What make your car run hot?
All sorts of thing can.. Low oil, low coolant, blocked radiator, stuck thermostat, running too lean on fuel... If it just suddenly started to do it and the levels are ok then check the thermostat.
