No, you cant.

While laptops often have ways to output video via VGA or S-video ports, they lack a way to input video.

Edit-

The real answer is "It depends"

I can use my laptop as a monitor-- It has a HDMI port on it. Actaully, I practice this quite frequently. Laptops with a legacy s-video or a HDMI port have the capability of being used in the manner, but sometimes the hardware doesn't support it. You're on your own for this one.

Almost Any screen can be used as another monitor for a computer. Its just the technology you use to depend whether or not you can use it as a monitor. If your using a 1970 television screen probably not but if your using a brand new top-of-the-line screen then probably so.

it will depend on the graphics card in your laptop. Most should allow an external monitor to be used as an extension to the desktop, instead of just cloning the display. You would have to adjust this in your display properties, if it is possible.

Sort Of, You Can Plug Your Laptop Up To Your TV

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have an HDMI output on your laptop, an HDMI input on your TV (you should if you have an HD TV), and an HDMI cord. All you do is plug the cord into your laptop and TV and voila, you are looking at your desktop on your TV monitor! Note: you may have to manually change the input to HDMI 1 or PC, but some TVs will switch automatically.

Also, I forget what it is called, but there should be a slot for hooking up to another computer monitor, you could try that.

You can easily connect a desktop monitor to your laptop using a video cable. Depending on which types of video ports are present on your laptop (VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc.), you may need to purchase an adapter as well that will allow you to match the connectors on your monitor and laptop correctly.

If a laptop Monitor breaks is there a way to replace it without buying a whole new laptop and if so how much money would it cost to replace or fix?

If the laptop is no longer under warranty, the cost of fixing the monitor would likely be more than the cost of the laptop. However, you can connect the laptop to any desktop monitor, you just need to buy a simple connector you can get at most any computer store, and you could also buy a used desktop monitor for very little.

I want to use my laptop monitor as the monitor for both my laptop and my desktop so if I run a dvi-HDMI cable from the dvi port on your desktop to the HDMI port on your notebook will this work?

No. The DVI port on your computer is output only. However, you may be able to find a USB TV tuner card with DVI input that would allow you to pull this off.

How is a laptop different from a desktop?

Basically, a laptop is designed to be portable, and can run off an internal battery until the battery goes flat. A desktop is designed to sit on a desk, table, workstation, etc, and is not meant to be portable. Unlike the more compact laptop, the desktop usually has an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, and is unlikely to have an internal battery. Both the laptop and desktop can be run off the mains.
