Yes, it is possible to split an atom in a molecule (nuclear fission) and it is possible to split an atom from a molecule (chemical dissociation).

In the first case, the processes of nuclear reactions have no respect for ordinary chemistry at all. If uranium is going to undergo fission, it does so, regardless of whether it is in a molecule or not.

In the second case, it happens all the time, as when table salt is dissolved in water, and the atoms ionize and go their separate ways.
