There are no numbers on this since it's not a sure science, just hoping for the best. Castor oil does not give you contractions directly, it gives you diarrhea. Those cramps are believed to sometimes bring on labor but usually it's just you sitting on the toilet with the runs. So stay away from the oil and start taking walks, have sex and eat spicy food if you want to try to induce by yourself. They think it's better for the body to start by itself though. Be patient.

castor is only a laxative. it doesn't actually induce labor. If you are already progressing it may help to kick start active labor. The reason for this is castor oil gets your intestines working and contributes to starting either menstrual like cramps or contractions. This will not work for everyone, but if you do try please take care to take the following steps to reduce the chance of making yourself very sick.

Don't take castor oil with food. It's meant to rush things through your system. Why give it ammo? On that note, just make sure you take it on an empty stomach.

Take it at night just before you go to bed. Not when you're halfway through your favorite show and will soon be thinking of going to bed. Make sure you can lie down within 5-10 minutes. You may not get much rest this night, so make sure to plan ahead and take a nap during the day.

If you didn't get the odorless/tasteless brand make sure to take measures to not smell the oil at all. Plug your nose from the time you pour out to the time you wash it down with some water.

Make sure you have nothing to be stressed about. Make sure the dishes are done, the laundry is folded, your phone is charged, and the hospital bags are packed.

If you are worried about taking too much, start with 1 Tbsp. If that does not work, then give your body time to get that Tbsp through your system and try again in a couple of days with 2 Tbsp. I don't suggest taking more than that.

This may not work for everyone, especially if you haven't started dilating yet, but make sure that if you take this route to keep yourself well hydrated.

NO!! You should not try this. It is to early. Your baby needs this time in the womb. It is developing. You baby develops right up to the time you go into natural labor. Please dont take this away from them. You want your baby to develop well so that they will be healthy when born. Some women go past 40 weeks and if this is your first you will likely go to around 42 weeks or more. This is normal. Your baby needs this time. Your body also needs this time to get ready for labor. A great person to talk to about your concerns is a Midwife. They are more willing to talk to you than a doctor and seem to have more time for one on one talk. Look for a local midwife and give her a call. Tell her about your worries and that you are thinking about castor oil. She can give you tips on how to deal with the last weeks and help calm you.
