Only if you want to have a horrible time. Even my ex, who was Peruvian but had lived in the U.S. 10 years, did not drink the water when we were there. Bottled ONLY. No ice (made with tap water).

∙ 12y agoYes, Peru is a safe place to travel either on your own or with a guide and as an individual or part of a group. The country has made great efforts to make it one of the truly unique places to visit in South America. With improvements to infrastructure to accommodate more tourist and many new hotels and lodging facilities being constructed Peru has many modern conveniences to go along with some of the greatest cultural and historic treasures in the world. Travel is safe and well worth it.

∙ 11y agoWhile most of the tourist areas in Peru are generally safe, the US State Department has a number of warnings for US citizens traveling in Peru. Most of these warnings are in relation to the Shining Path guerilla group which has been known to attack Americans and other foreigners. It is best to check with the State Department for more information on specific areas of the country and to register with the US Embassy while one is traveling in Peru.
