Is Acapulco safe?

Unfortunately, no. It is the third most dangerous city in Latin America, just behind San Pedro Sula (Honduras) and Juarez, also in Mexico. During 2011 there were more than 1060 drug-related murders on that city alone, and the murder rate is of 128 per 100,000 people. It is best to stay away from such city.

Is Mexico a secure place to travel?

It depends. There are regions and cities within the country which are very safe to visit, such as Cancun, Los Cabos or the Mayan Riviera. There are other cities with less security but are worth the risk, such as Mexico City, Mazatlan or Tijuana. Finally, there are cities which you should avoid at all costs, as those are very dangerous for both locals and foreigners alike, such as Juarez, Reynosa and Acapulco.

What is the closest airport to Acapulco?

Juan Alvarez International Airport is IN Acapulco. Due to cartel violence, most major US Airlines (Delta, American 4 example) have pulled out of the city. But you can still catch one major airline in AeroMexico, which flies all the way from many destinations in the USA and around the world, or combine AeroMexico's services with a low cost, such as Interjet or Volaris. Low cost airlines in Mexico are safe and offer modern Airbus jets.

Is Mexico city safe?

Yes. The best way of measuring personal safety would be the number of intentional homicides per 100,000 people, or murder rate. For Mexico City, it is 3.7, which puts this city as safe as say, Seattle, WA (3.4) or safer than Anaheim, CA (5.2). When compared against cities with similar populations, such as Los Angeles (7.1) or Chicago (28.7), Mexico City is definitely much safer.
