Is it bad for a strut to stay fully compressed over a long period of time?

It doesn't matter to the strut where the spring pressure is and for how long.

Can you drive with a broken strut?

No, you can't. If the strut is broken, the whole corner of the car will collapse going over a bump and could cause more damage.

Can a bent front strut cause alignment problems and a springing sound while driving over bumps in a Nissan Sentra 1997?

Yes it is possible. I have a 2001 sentra and recently replaced the front right strut and coil spring. It didn't have a springing sound though, more of a clunk sound when driving over bumps and on turns. The strut was bent and the coil spring broken. Also the sway bars had play. It was safe to drive with play in the bar, but until it got new links put in, it still made the same sound.

How many strutes are on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier?

There are 4 struts, They are not shocks.. They are called "coil over's". Meaning coil spring over strut. You will need a coil spring compressor to replace them yourself. Rent one at autozone.

How do you replace a strut coil spring on 2001 Chevy Cavalier?

you will need spring compressers they will come in different styles this is a hazardous task.you will have 2,3 or 4 nuts or bolts on top of the strut tower there will be a cap over a nut in the center of tower(this is the nut that holds the spring compressed DO NOT REMOVE THIS YET) lift car where wheel is off the ground you will remove the upper strut nuts/bolts and there will be 2 bolts attaching the strut to the steering knuckle on the bottom remove them and remove the castle nut on outer tie rod end tie rod end separator is usful place strut in spring compressor and compress this is when you remove the center nut release pressure on spring the reverse process to reassemble CAUTION MOST STRUT SPRNGS HAVE ABOUT 1500 PSI SO BE CAREFUL you will need to get a front end alignment after this change the rear will be very simalar with out tierod end and smaller no alignment willbe needed

Why does your 97 integra make a clunking sound in the front end when you drive over rough roads or bumps?

Worn suspension parts - struts Loose strut mount?

How is contact between drive and driven members of a clutch maintained?

How do you change struts on 2002 grand prix gt?

You will need a set of spring compressors, and it's not too difficult. pull back the carpet in the trunk, and remove the rubber cups over the strut mounting bolts. The bolts will require an offset 11/16 or larger wrench and an Allen key to break loose. Once the top is loose, compress the spring, remove the two bolts at the wheel location, and the strut should drop out with the spring. This is a tedius job but not too difficult.

99 grand am rattling noise from front end?

It could be your front strut mounts need to be replaced. The rubber inside the strut mounts, wears out. You will hear the noise when u drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. my 2004 grand am se1 4 door ,with the 3.4 v6 engine and automatic transmission, needs the front strut mounts replaced.

Why does my rear driver-side tire make a rattling noise when going over a bump or rough roads could it be worn out bearings and is that an easy fix?

Assuming something isn't broke it is more likely the strut that is worn out. Bearing would grind all the time. When the strut is worn out and you go over a bump the tire will leave the ground which lets it vibrate and make noise.

What is the difference between shocks and struts on a Volkswagen vento?

A 'strut' is an abbreviation of the word 'Macphereson strut - named after its Scottish inventor. A 'shock' is an abbreviation of the word 'Shock absorber'. The Macphereson strut is a suspension component that has a 'damper' (or shock absorber) and a heavy duty spring all in the same unit. The spring allows the vehicle to travel over bumps without the vibrations from the road surface transferring to the vehicle body and the Shock absorber is designed to remove the oscillations in the spring caused by the road surface (it slows it down and stops it from continually bouncing by having a 'Dampening' effect). A 'Shock absorber or Damper' is a single component that is part of the suspension doing the same job as above but is a separate unit to the road spring which allows it/them to be removed or replaced independently of each other.
