Kalpana ChawalaKalpana Chawala was an astronaut and missions specialist. She studied aeronautical engineering and received a Bachelor of Science degree. Then she received two Masters of Science degree in aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering. She was also the first (and only) Indian woman to travel in space.

So, she was more of an engineer than a scientist.

Finaly she is not a scientist

Kalpana Chawla was born in India on March 17, 1962. She attended Punjab Engineering College at Chandigarh before moving to the United States where she enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington, and then the University of Colorado at Boulder. She was a research scientist for NASA before becoming an astronaut. Chawla was killed aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003.

She was born in Karnal in India on March the 17th 1962.

She was a NASA mission specialist killed in the Columbia space shuttle disaster on February 1st 2003. It was her second space flight.

She was born on July 1 1961 and died on 1 February 2003. when she grew up she became an Indian-American astronaut of NASA. She was the first astronaut from India and from the World to go the moon. During her journey to space she died while returning from the Moon Luna.

At the Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award for Outstanding Women 2009, held at Bhargava Auditorium in PGI, it was a day to celebrate the occasion of women empowerment. The award, held on the death anniversary of the first Asian-Indian woman to fly in the US space shuttle, saw women from all walks of life come together. Kalpana's father Banarasi Lal Chawla, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The award, in its sixth year, was constituted by the Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh Old Boys' Association (PECOBA). Amarjit Singh Kohli, general secretary, PECOBA, said the objective behind conferring the awards on women is to acknowledge their achievements.

"The award is a way of carrying forward the legacy of excellence and hard work left behind by Kalpana Chawla. Women deserve to be applauded for their successes and the award is an effort in the same direction," he said.

Kalpana Chawla was so great that At least 30,000 schoolchildren and citizens joined hands to make a 36.4-km-long human chain to support the demand for a Kalpana Chawla medical college in the city which was announced by then Health Minister of India Dr. C. P. Thakur and later on promised by Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh.
