There are three kinds of fiberboard--low-density, medium-density and high-density. All three are made by mixing powdered wood fiber and adhesive, then pressing them in a hydraulic press. Low-density fiberboard is made by compressing a foot-thick pile of fiber to 1/2" thickness. Medium-density fiberboard compresses a foot of fiber to 1/4" thickness, and high-density fiberboard compresses a foot of fiber to 1/8" thickness. Low-density fiberboard is usually coated with asphalt on one side and used as cheap sheathing under siding on houses. Medium-density fiberboard is used for a multitude of purposes, and high-density fiberboard is used for laminate flooring.

How-to tile directly onto wood flooring?

Typically you dont want to tile directly over wood. The reason is that wood will shrink and grow depending on moister, and you will end up cracking your tile. Your best option is to put down a cement board or a fiber board. This can be picked up at a lowes or home depot. My preference is the 1/4" fiber board, it is really easy to work with, you can cut it with a skill saw, where you cant do that with the cement board. You are also going to want to tape your joints on your fiber board, this will help prevent cracking of grout joints and tiles. Good luck
