One of the simplest and earliest examples of technology was the invention of the wheel. That simple tool provided a method for handling the process of more easily transporting things. It wasn't complex, but it was functional and it was, at the time, an advancement in science that changed lives.

A company may develop a new technology through a process of research and development. A university scientist may develop technology through conducting research for the university or for a company.

Some technology is discovered through purposeful efforts to solve a problem. Other technologies are invented by accident or in the quest for something else. For example, the microwave was invented by a scientist attempting to do experiments with radar, while the pacemaker was invented by a scientist attempting to create a device that recorded a heart beat.
