Yes, cotton picking was tiring, back then in the day, but went you were born in south Texas, and being Mexican. Went their was no other way to put food in your table, you had to pick cotton for five to six months of the year. No it was not painful, it was a way to survive back then, we had to travel for hundreds of mile every year, just to carve out a living, picking cotton was our only hope back then for a better life. My family did it for over twenty years. Thank you Martinaino Chapa
They picked cotton by hand. Hand picking was the only option until the 1950's when cotton picking machine was developed. Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin on March 14 1794 to remove the seeds and pods from the picked cotton

Cotton is currently picked by machine. They used to have slaves pick the cotton in the south by hand. You seem to have forgotton the people (both white & black) that picked cotton after the slaves & before the cotton picking machines.
If done by hand I believe the term is "picking", however in modern times a machine called a "cotton gin" is used to do this and the process is called "ginning".
No. It was created to remove cotton seed from the cotton. To remove the seeds without the gin meant hours of work picking them out by hand. With the cotton gin pounds of cotton could be processed and more grown.
The Cotton G in was an invention created by Eli Whitney. He created the Cotton Gin in 1793. This invention was a quicker alternative to picking seed out of cotton by hand. The machine had spiked teeth on a boxed revolving cylinder to pick the seeds.
It was invented to mechanically separate cotton fibers from their seeds, which until then had been done by hand by slaves. An unforseen effect was that it did not reduce the demand for slaves as might have been expected; on the contrary, it led to an explosive growth of cotton production and because of that, to an increase in the demand for slaves.
It is a plant. If you drive around on highways were there are farms and such, you may see some cotton. And there is a big machine that picks it all, instead of picking it all by hand.
