It will be one of me more straight grained woods you can find in the US. The southern yellow pine variety (which is found in most retailers of lumber) will have fairly straight grain and will provide good support and structure.

There are four main species of Southern Pine - shortleaf, longleaf, loblolly, and slash. Long Leaf Southern Pine is heavy, hard, strong and coarse grained. It is very durable when dry and well ventilated. It cannot be used in contact with the ground. It is used for heavy framing timbers and floors. Short Leaf Southern Pine can vary greatly in quality but is used as a substitute for long leaf pine.
