In many parts of Africa, polygamy is clearly an advantage for the man. Firstly, child- and woman mortality is high in less developed African countries, and having more than one wife increases the mans chances on assuring that his genes are passed on to the next generation. Secondly, a mans status within the village rises by number of wives. The chief of a clan mostly has the largest number of wives and children, which shows how fertile he is and by means of this that he is capable of leading his people.

But, you can't just generalize "the African man", since Africa is a continent and divided into a good many of individual countries, and in each one the situation is completely different. Cultures vary from more Arabian influenced ones like most of the Northern countries such as Egypt over troubled, poor ones like Somalia to quite westernized countries like South Africa.

Polygamy can be seen as an advantage in some African cultures where it is socially acceptable and practiced, as it can provide support, meet various household and family needs, and strengthen social ties. However, polygamy can also have disadvantages, such as financial strain, unequal treatment of wives, and potential conflicts within the family. Ultimately, the views on polygamy vary among individuals and communities in Africa.
