Slavery is contrary to many of the values of modern society, including democracy, equal rights, religious reasons, and equality of every human. Few people want to be a slave if given an alternative. People can accomplish more in society if there is no fear of becoming a slave. It provides mental security and morality.
The choosing of people for slaves were not strictly for skill reasons either. If all people are capable of becoming whatever occupation they choose to be, it provides for a much more productive society. If people today were still slaves because of the basis of race, we would not have as many nuclear scientists, doctors, rocket scientists, etc.
