Umm... Of course it is. How old are you? Sleeping reenergizes the mind and if you don't sleep and reenergize your mind may overthink things and everyone also knows that it's not a godd think to overwork your mind because you would end up believing anything anyone says. ;)
Clinical trials have shown that sleep is important for normal cognative function and development. Reduced sleep has shown to reduce reaction time, lower cognative ability and even cause hallucinations. Continually staying awake for more than 24 hrs straight is mentally equivalent (in terms of reaction time) to a 0.05 blood alcohol reading. ~7/8 hrs sleep is a good range.
Additionally, sleep is important for memory. While awake, experiences that you have throughout the day (including learning) are stored chemically. When you sleep, those chemical memories are processed by your brain, and the "important" memories are transformed into synapses. Dreaming is a by-product of your brain testing the new synaptic pathways.
Studies have found that persons with some learning disabilities have a shorter chemical memory. Normal chemical memory is about 24 hours for a person. As long as they sleep some time in there so that the brain can process the chemical memories, their memory is fine. However, if someone has a short-term chemical memory (say for example, 6 hours), they may forget the things that they learned earlier in the day before they can sleep to commit those chemical memories to permanent ones.
This problem often manifests itself when a teacher or parent says "Didn't we just learn this yesterday?" The answer may honestly be that the person forgot, because of short chemical memory.
Of course! sleep is important for every living thing.
