I wouldn't recommend eating it pure, but essentially if you were to eat some (pure), at worst, you might have an upset stomach for a few hours.

Sodium carbonate = Na2C03

it would dissociate into sodium ions and carbonate ions, both of which already exist in quite large quantities in your body.

the main reason why you might feel sick is the carbonate ions acting as a base, making your stomach acid...well...less acidic, but this largely depends on how much of it (pure) you eat.

inherently, no, not toxic.

mind you, a quick Google reveals that its used in cooking, so yeah.

Sodium oxide is a strong base ingesting it would cause major damage to the linings of the mouth and throat. Expect to spend a long time in hospital (if you survive long enough to get there), do not expect to recover completely.

Pure sodium is not safe to ingest, and is very lethal. However, the sodium that is in your food is not toxic in moderation.
