Across cultures stealing is generally looked at as "wrong".
But to say it is a mortal sin is incorrect. It is an ethical ordeal. For example a mother who steals food for her starving to death children could hardly be called acting in a sinful manner.

No. A mortal sin is a sin that you know is seriously wrong and you know you are doing it. A mortal sin would be like if you seriosulsy injured someone on purpose.

The Catholic Church does not have a "list" of sins. Simply, a mortal sin is a sin that merits hell. For a sin to be considered mortal three conditions need to be met: * Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter * Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner * Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner
A mortal sin is any serious sin that completely severs your relationship with God. For a sin to be mortal, it must be three criteria: 1) Be a serious sin - stealing is always a sin, stealing a large amount of money, or even a small amount, if that is all the person had to live on would be serious. Stealing a paperclip would not be. You are responsible for knowing what are serious sins: the Ten Commandments, the Six Precepts of the Church, etc. 2) You must know that it is a sin, in other words, you need a properly formed conscience. Please note that you are responsible for properly forming your conscience, and if you do not do that, then that alone is a mortal sin. However, if the person is young and has not yet learned, then the responsibility would be lessened. 3) Even though you know it offends God and that it is wrong, you don't care, and are going to do it anyway. Again, please note, this all does not mean that you had to have someone in Catechism class teach you that abortion is a mortal sin, then you make up your mind to do it anyway, and you don't care what God thinks about it. These are not all conscience decisions, if you are old enough to get pregnant, then you should know that killing your baby is wrong, so you would still be responsible. If in doubt, speak to your priest in the confessional.
