Suicide is not a solution to personal problems. Whether it is considered a sin or not, it is always a terrible mistake. God requires the believer who feels drawn to suicide to seek help from someone, whether a pastor, doctor or trusted teacher. Life is sacred because it is a gift from God.
Yet, if a loved one has been a victim of suicide, it is important to know that while it is true that Christianity and some other religions traditionally have viewed suicide as a terrible sin, there is now much greater understanding of mental illness and compassion about other traumas that contribute to suicide. Because a mentally ill person is not capable of understanding the significance of their behavior, many Christian leaders would not hold them responsible for that action. Indeed, one can say that anyone who commits suicide is in a deeply disturbed mental state and not responsible for the action, and therefore, not guilty of any sin.

At the same time, Judaism approaches the issue from the point that in cases of definite or likely mental illness, the person is not responsible for their actions and therefore shouldn't be held accountable.

∙ 6y agoYes. Suicide is, without exception, the worst thing a person can do, since it is the only thing for which repentance is impossible.Even for murder or idolatry (etc.), a person can make the effort at repentance. For suicide, that is precluded by definition.
