When did old white five pound notes go out of circulation?

I haven't found a date on which they were withdrawn from circulation, but they obviously have been, probably around 1957 when the first issue of colored notes were issued. All Bank of England notes from which legal tender status has been withdrawn remain payable at face value forever at the Bank of England in London. Since the average piece of paper money wears out in less than two years, it is quite possible that they were never officially withdrawn. They could have just faded away. ------- The White Fiver was withdrawn in 1957. This is when the Bank of England stops printing and distributing the notes and as they are returned for destruction the issue gradually disappears. The White Fiver ceased being legal tender on 13 march 1961. This is when the note is no longer acceptable as a means of payment. Simon Holmes.

What year was the British Pound first introduced?

The Bank of England first issued paper money in 1694, but these were for irregular, and usually large amounts. The first ever British Pound notes were issued in 1797, but this was not on a permanent basis. The regular issue of the British Pound and Ten Shilling note began in 1915 when they replaced the gold Sovereign and half-Sovereign, due to financial pressures brought about by WW1. The One Pound note was last issued in December, 1984, and demonetised and withdrawn in 1988 after being replaced by a nickel/brass coin in 1983.

The currency in England in 1700?

The currency of the Kingdom of England in 1700 was the Pound Sterling - exactly the same currency as the UK has now. Well, not quite the same. Today's pound has decimal sub-units. Before that, there were many different non-decimal fractions of a pound as well as there being the guinea (a gold coin worth 1.05 pound), which had its own array of sub-units. Also, there was no pound coin. The largest in that era was only 1/4 of a pound

Why do es a pound of books and a pound of feathers weigh the same?

Because each is a pound. If it helps to visualize it, think of a pound of books being a small box and a pound of feathers being a very big box.
