Yes. The Baptist sprang from the Dissenters who came out of the Church of England (some note roots in the Anabaptist movement). Regardless, it springs out of the movements that separated themselves from the Roman Catholic church in the 1500s and 1600s.

There are those who would like to say that Baptists should not be grouped with Protestants. Some (Landarkists and such) see Baptists as being a continuation of the 1st century church. They tend to disconnect the Baptist movement from historical movements including the Protestant Reformation. Some others see the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s as a move towards freedom of nations to have state churches. These people would see Baptists, Anabaptists, Quakers and such as being a separate movement toward freedom of the individual to worship as he/she pleases.

Despite these objections noted above, the historical ties of Baptists to the Protestant Reformation are strong, and as such Baptists can reasonably be seen as Protestants.

Is a Baptist church in the south a Southern Baptist church?

A Southern Baptist Church is part of the Southern Baptist Convention and hold to certain conservative beliefs although each church is fundamentally autonomous. There is a Southern Baptist Church actually in Northport, Washington 7 miles from the Canadian border so, location is not the only thing that determines Southern Baptist. Actually, not only is location "not" the only thing, it isn't a factor at all. If a church is officially a member of the SBC, it is a Southern Baptist Church, no matter where it is located. There are Southern Baptist churches in many parts of the country and the world.
