Best Answer

No, according to Jewish law, the rules surrounding sentencing someone to death are so strict that when the Sanhedrin (court) existed, such a punishment was extremely rare. In fact, a Sanhedrin that sentenced someone to death even once in 70 years was noted for that one sentence.

Today, it's not even possible to sentence someone to death according to Jewish law as the Sanhedrin does not exist.

Was Ed Asner an Orthodox Jew?

Technically, Asner is Jewish. To, "be Jewish," one only needs to be born from a Jewish mother. Ed Asner was born and raised by orthodox Jewish parents. Asner has publicly spoken in favor of Darwinism and against Creationism. I doubt that he is a practicing Jew.So, there you have it. Asner is technically Jewish according to Jewish law. Asner is also ethnically Jewish, being born of Jewish parents. However, I have seen no evidence that he is practicing Judaism as a religion in his life.

What degree of scrutiny does the US Supreme Court require for death penalty appeals?

The US Supreme Court requires "heightened scrutiny" for death penalty appeals. Heightened scrutiny is an intermediate level of judicial review between "strict scrutiny" and "rational basis." To withstand the heightened scrutiny test, the law or policy must "further an important government interest by means that are substantially related to that interest.""The standard of review for an appeal from a capital murder conviction and death sentence is that of "heightened scrutiny"; all doubts are to be resolved in favor of the accused because what may be harmless error in a case with less at stake becomes reversible error when the penalty is death."
